Every Queensland state school P&C executive officer needs to understand the rules and regulations for P&Cs. P&Cs are governed by the Queensland Department of Education.  The following Department of Education procedure contains a good summary of the legislative framework under which Queensland P&Cs operate, as well as many relevant links.  Parents and Citizens Associations Management Procedures

Executive Positions:

President:

The President acts as a representative of the Association, encourages communication between the Association, School administration and the community and encourages participation in the Association.  The President will be the chair of the meetings and conduct them in an efficient and timely fashion, being familiar with the rules, constitution and other documents governing Association operations. The President is an official member of the school council for the School (if one exists).

Candidate 1   Leigh Passfield

I am currently the President of TGSHS P&C and have been an active member of the P&C since 2017. My two children are currently at the school.

I enjoy working with people to bring ideas and opportunities to life, and TGSHS P&C is about this in spades. Being able to collaborate with different groups within the school community has resulted in some big positive changes and hopefully more will be achieved.

Recently we have implemented the café which has become a hub for students and a resource to assist them in getting job ready, we have implemented online ordering and payment systems to make life easier for parents, we have established structures to help bring the community together such as establishment and growth of A4A (Activities for Activities) and PEG (Parent Engagement Group) as subcommittees, and we have facilitated more ways parents/guardians can hear from the school and give feedback.

Working with people to come up with ideas and solutions is what I enjoy. Implementation of some of the ideas is an ongoing process and sometimes seems to take “forever” but commitment to the change sees many things through.

Having an open and transparent P&C is really important to a school community and I am a very strong advocate of this and intend to ensure this continues.

I am happy to serve again as President to work with a new executive team to see the current projects finished and help guide and develop new ones.

Candidate 2   Scott Spence

Hi, I’m Scott Spence, I first arrived in The Gap in 2004. My children were brought up in The Gap. I run a local project management training company and my partner, Rachel runs a childcare center in West End.

My involvement in the P&C has been a long one, firstly as president in 2017, dealing with shoegate in 2018 and then as membership manager and vice president in 2019 and 2020. We have had our current president for 2 years, change is good and with a fresh set of eyes I’d be happy to take up the mantle again.  https://youtu.be/N8bedBNXfZY

I have three children at TGSHS; Alexander (Year 7) Robin (Year 10) and Zoe (Year 9). I’ve got plenty of experience that makes me ideal for the role of president.

During the year that I was P&C president we carried out some significant technological changes in the uniform shop, increased participation of parents at meetings and initiated online email communication with parents. Meetings seldom went much beyond 2 hours – in itself no small feat.

Here are three reasons you should pick me for president:

  1. I have experience with organisations going through cultural change
  2. I have a track record of delivering value to the P&C
  3. I am focused on the smooth management of the P&C

My plan for the P&C is to strengthen employer-employee relationships and relationships with local businesses. Increasing parent involvement through innovative ways to engage the broader community.

Vice-President:

Steps into the role of the President should they be unavailable and undertakes tasks to reduce the workload of the President.  The Vice President needs to be familiar with the operation of the P&C;  be acquainted with the duties of President;  and understand meeting rules and procedure.  The Vice President should consider this position as the president’s understudy and to provide support and assistance to the president.

Candidate 1   Andy Davey

Hi, I’m a father of two teenagers at TGSHS ( Yr9 and 10). Outside of being a father and Husband of 19yrs, I’m an Engineer working as the National Operations Manager for a Modular Construction business. I won’t bore you all with my professional resume, feel free to look me up on LinkedIn. I have over 20yrs years of management experience that I bring to our P&C executive.

At TGSHS we have three businesses in operation, all with their own challenges. I joined the P&C executive in 2019 and in that time have worked closely with Leigh to start to transform many aspects of our businesses, specifically the uniform shop and tuck shop – both of which are now producing improved results. As a P&C we have a fiscal responsibility to maximise the profitability of the school businesses for the benefit of the school and the students.

I have a can-do attitude to life and work which I hope brings a level of positivity and forward thinking to our P&C. I love taking on project challenges that produce direct results for the school, an example of this is the recently installed skateboard and scooter racks that I designed for the school.

Should I be re-elected I am looking forward to working harmoniously with the new executive to make the most of what is left of our interrupted post covid school year and also put in place longer term plans for continued growth of our three businesses.

Candidate 2   David Nichols

David Nichols lives in The Gap with his Wife Andrea and three children, Trinity (year 12), Aliya (year 9) and Tayt who attends TGSS (year 6). David has been actively involved with the high school since 2015 as a committed member of the P & C, as well as a School Councillor and now a lead for the A4A activity Program. He is an ambassador for community awareness and activities associated within The Gap.

Being an advocate for raising funds for the school, David’s main aim is to bring communities together by organising and managing successful activities such as Nerf Wars, Cheese Fest and The Gap Ninja Warrior.

Within his personal life David has fulfilled executive roles such as CEO and Managing Director for multi-million-dollar enterprises. He is currently COO for an International specialist oil and gas organisation which is currently expanding through Australia and the USA.

He is an enthusiastic inventor, creator and mentor to a young generation. Over the past 10 years, David has been an inspirational leader, empowering young engineers to become recognised industry leaders. He is also a main contributor to various Code of Practices as technical writer, innovator and chairperson managing over 40 avid members to the oil and gas specialist sector.

His sharp wit, dedication, and extraordinary sense of humour makes David a perfect candidate to support the P&C, its members, the school staff but more importantly, the pupils that attend the school.
